Finally! Bellingham expected to have first 70-degree day in 8 months
ISABELLE DILLS / THE BELLINGHAM HERALD
Bellingham may have its first 70-degree day in more than eight months this Saturday, June 4.
The National Weather Service is forecasting a cloudless weekend with a high temperature of 70 degrees Saturday and 72 degrees Sunday.
As long as the breeze stays low, Bellingham should reach those high temperatures, NWS meteorologist Mike McFarland said.
As of Friday, Bellingham had gone 249 consecutive days without reaching 70 degrees - though Friday's official high was close, at 69.1 degrees. The record is 254 days set in 1955, according to the National Weather Service, which keeps records for Bellingham as far back as 1949.
In 1955, it didn't hit 70 until June 6, meteorologist Carl Cerniglia said.
Patricia Alesse, co-owner of The C Shop in Birch Bay, said she and her staff we're looking forward to the nice weather, since it's likely to bring in extra customers to the café and candy shop.
"The main thing is people will come to the beach for the day when it's nice weather, and then they come here," Alesse said.
They also may hit the Birch Bay Waterslides, now open on weekends.
For those who will want to spend the warm weekend near water, the NWS is reminding people to be extra safe near rivers and lakes where the water is often "cold, high and swift."
Springtime weather often results in people drowning, according to the NWS. Water conditions may appear harmless, but the water in lakes - and especially rivers - is often dangerously cold.
Water temperatures in the streams are currently running from the lower 50s in the warmer lowlands to the upper 30s higher upstream, according to the NWS.
